There are moments in history when a nation changes the course of another people’s destiny.
For more than 2 million Vietnamese Americans, America became that place.
Fifty-one years ago, many of us arrived with little more than hope. Some came with a small suitcase. Some came with nothing at all. We left behind the only home we had ever known, uncertain of what tomorrow would bring, but believing that somewhere beyond the horizon there was a country where freedom was more than a dream.
America welcomed us.
The road was never easy.
Many of our parents and grandparents began their new lives digging ditches at construction sites, mowing lawns under the summer sun, washing dishes in restaurant kitchens long after midnight, waiting tables, cleaning hotel rooms, babysitting children, sewing garments, or working in factories. Others built family-owned restaurants where grandparents cooked, parents served tables, children washed dishes after school, and every member of the family worked together to keep the business alive.
Thousands entered the nail salon industry, working ten or twelve hours a day, six or seven days a week. They endured aching backs, sore hands, and years without vacations so their children could earn college degrees they themselves never had the opportunity to pursue.
Every dollar mattered.
Families shared apartments. Every paycheck helped pay the rent, utilities, groceries, and school supplies. Eating out was a luxury few could afford, yet every meal prepared at home was filled with fresh ingredients, love, sacrifice, and hope for a better tomorrow.
Success did not arrive overnight.
It was earned through perseverance, discipline, patience, and determination.
Today, Vietnamese Americans are physicians, nurses, engineers, teachers, scientists, entrepreneurs, military service members, first responders, attorneys, judges, artists, journalists, business owners, public servants, and community leaders. We own companies that create jobs, contribute to scientific discoveries, strengthen local economies, support charitable organizations, and enrich every profession and industry across this nation.
Our community has grown from approximately 130,000 refugees in 1975 to more than 2 million Vietnamese Americans today.
That is more than a story of survival.
It is an American story.
As our nation celebrates 250 years of independence, we pause with hearts full of gratitude.
Thank you to the generations of Americans who believed that freedom should be shared with those seeking refuge.
Thank you for the opportunities to learn, to work, to worship freely, to build businesses, to raise families, and to dream without fear.
Today, Vietnamese Americans are proud to give back—to serve our communities, mentor the next generation, support our neighbors, and help build an even stronger America for everyone.
The promise of America has never been that success is guaranteed.
Its promise is that everyone has the opportunity to pursue it.
May this nation always remain a beacon where Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness are the unalienable rights of every person.
From our families to yours—
Thank you, America.
Happy 250th Birthday, and may God continue to bless the United States of America. ❤️🤍💙🇺🇸
